Boots
In any crash, your feet are most likely to hit the ground first. They need strong, secure protection - and joggers, basketball shoes, bare feet or thongs are not up to the job.
Choose boots that are light, secure and reinforced. Make sure they:

- are neither too loose nor too tight - you should not be able to pull them off easily
- have impact protection for the shins, instep and ankles
- have defined heels
- have waterproof rubber soles at least 10 millimetres (mm) bigger than your feet - soles should be sewn on, oil-proof and be at least 4 mm thick (not including cleats)
- be at least 160 mm high from the inner sole. Leather should be at least 2.5 mm thick
- don't have laces which may catch on footpegs or gear levers.
